Understanding UMF™ & MGO on Manuka Honey

UMF™ (Unique Manuka Factor) is an independent grading system that checks multiple markers in Manuka honey, including authenticity and potency. A higher UMF™ number means a higher verified strength.

MGO (methylglyoxal) is the main natural compound responsible for Manuka honey’s unique potency. The MGO number on the label shows how many milligrams of methylglyoxal are present per kilogram of honey – higher MGO means stronger potency.

How to read your jar:

  • UMF™ grade = overall quality and strength score (third-party certified).
  • MGO number = direct measure of methylglyoxal content (mg/kg).
